“THE SILVER MESSENGERS”
Carmen Souza: vocal, guitar. Ben Burrell: piano. Theo Pascal: bass guitar. Elias Kacomanolis: drums, percussions.
It is impossible to understand modern music without the concept of Black Atlantic coined by the scholar, Paul Girloy, that is, the physical and cultural space where the conditions for the birth and development of most of the sounds which we are immersed in have been generated: jazz, blues, soul, morna, son, samba, bossanova, reggae. Girloy has explained how slave trade produced a particular diasporic condition that favoured hybridisation, and how this has poured into cultural, literary and musical practices. The latest album by Portuguese singer, of Cape Verdean origin, Carmen Souza, as its title The Silver Messanger suggests, is indebted to the contribution of the great musician, Horace Silver. The artist takes us across Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Brazil, Cuba, the United States, travelling the old routes of the Black Atlantic and tracing new ones.
