CROSS CURRENTS TRIO
Dave Holland: double bass. Zakir Hussain: tablas. Chris Potter: saxophone, clarinet. The Cross Currents Trio is a “supergroup” formed by a legend of the double bass, the Englishman Dave Holland, a central figure in jazz since his collaboration with Miles Davis in seminal albums, such as Bitches Brew, and then composer and leader of ensembles that have written the history of African-American music in recent decades. With him, the American saxophonist, Chris Potter, and the Indian percussionist, Zakir Hussain, a tabla virtuoso. Their music explores the relationship between Indian folk music and jazz, taking its cue from the improvisation at the heart of both. Since the 1960s, the fascination of many jazz musicians with the immense Indian musical tradition has led to collaborations based on a new spiritual search and a closer relationship between East and West. Today that research is taken up by this trio with virtuous enthusiasm and sincere abandon.
